FREE Childbirth Class

Childbirth Classes

Women’s Health and Surgery Center hosts monthly prenatal birthing classes for expectant moms and dads. Attendees learn about vaginal and cesarean deliveries, when to know when labor begins, what to expect at the hospital and during the delivery process, epidurals, postpartum, breastfeeding, and more. Mary Washington Healthcare Sponsored  Classes

All classes listed below are conducted by Mary Washington Healthcare. To register or for a schedule of current classes, please contact Mary Washington Health Link at 540.741.1404 Ext. 1. Classes for Medicaid/VA Premier Patients are an automatic $10. All others needing financial assistance, please call 540.741.4486. Please do not allow finances be a deterrent to taking classes.

Prepared Childbirth – $90 per couple

The path from pregnancy to parenthood is childbirth. Classes will help you and your birth partner prepare to give birth. Childbirth classes include information on the labor process, relaxation, and breathing, role of the partner, medical interventions, cesarean delivery, and the post partum period. You will tour the maternity ward during one of your classes. Prepared Childbirth encourages a woman to use relaxation and breathing techniques to work together with her body, her partner, and her caregivers to give birth to her baby. Call for dates and times.

Childbirth Basics – $65 per couple

This course is for expectant parents who cannot attend a full Prepared Childbirth series. Class covers basic process of labor and delivery, breathing and relaxation, what to expect in the hospital, cesarean section and includes a tour of the maternity ward. Call for dates and times.

Home with Baby – $30 per couple

This class teaches first-time parents to learn what to expect in the first two weeks at home with your new baby. Learn the basics of infant care; receive answers to your questions. Practice bathing and diapering on newborn dolls. Call for dates and times.

Breastfeeding: Great Beginnings and Beyond – $25

This 2.5 hour class is for both moms and dads and focuses on the basics of breastfeeding your newborn. Preparation and education will help you feel more confident as you start this journey. We will also discuss pumps, when to start pumping, milk storage, and returning to work. Classes are taught by Certified Lactation Consultants. Plan to attend this class prior to your delivery so you will feel more confident breastfeeding your baby right from the start. $25/couple

Sibling – Free

This class is for big brothers and sisters (to be) who are two through seven years of age. At least one parent must attend the class with the child. This one-hour class includes a tour, video and practicing (big brother/sister skills). Call for dates and times.

Infant CPR – $40 per couple

Learn the ABC’s of infant CPR (birth to 1 year of age) with skill performance on mannequins. This is a must for ALL parents who do not already know CPR. This course is non-certifiable. Call for dates and times.

Mother and Babies Group The First 6 Months – Free

This free postpartum support group is sponsored by The Family Birth Place, Mary Washington Hospital. Meets every week on Wednesday from 10:00-11:00a.m. Meet other mothers and share experiences, learn about baby care topics from the nurse coordinator, weigh your baby on a medical grade scale, get breastfeeding questions answered. No registration, no fee. Location: Carl D. Silver/Moss Clinic, 1301 Sam Perry Blvd. Fredericksburg, VA. Please park around the back of the Moss Building and access meeting location through the sliding glass doors. Call Health link for further details. Call for dates and times.

HTS (Healing Through Support) Support Group – Free

Fourth Thursday each month at 7:00 p.m. (Third Thursday in November and December)
Meets at Mary Washington Hospital. Support for parents recovering from miscarriage, stillbirth, or the loss of a newborn. No registration, no fee. Call for dates and times.

Tour of Stafford Hospital Birthing Center

Tour our unique LDRP unit where you will stay in the same room for the duration of your labor, delivery and postpartum period. Tours are offered on one Saturday of the month at 10:00 am and 11:00am.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED CALL HEALTH LINK AT 540-741-1404 ext 1. Meet in the mother/baby waiting room on the 2nd floor to the right of the elevators. Tours will begin PROMPTLY AT SCHEDULED TIME and YOU WILL NOT BE ADMITTED TO THE UNIT ONCE THE TOUR HAS BEGUN DUE TO SECURITY ISSUES.
